This institute located on the beautiful beach of Abondrona, just a 30 minute taxi ride from Hell-Ville, is giving young children a genuine second chance at life. The centre is run by Frontier’s partner Church organisation and takes in children from all over Madagascar who have been abandoned by their families due to physical handicaps or minor learning difficulties.

Coming from poor backgrounds the families of these children either choose to reject them or pass them onto the Church, as their meager funds and other responsibilities make looking after disabled children impossible.

At the centre they receive physiotherapy, and if necessary, corrective surgery, in order to improve their chances of leading a normal adult life. At the centre these children have a chance to learn and play and develop without suffering because of their handicaps.

As a volunteer here I had the chance to work alongside the dedicated nuns and domestic workers who aim to entertain and challenge these children to develop. I was able to lead activities sessions, provide tutoring on schoolwork and help out with physiotherapy workouts to help these children grow stronger and more confident in their new selves.
